Lyocell

Lyocell

It all starts with wood. Mostly, it’s fast-growing eucalyptus which grows without need for irrigation or pesticides, though oak and birch are also used. After harvesting, the wood is cut into small pieces, ground to a pulp, and dissolved by the chemical amine oxide, of which 99.5% can be used again. What remains is sticky liquid raw cellulose, which is spun into white lyocell fibres using a spinneret. After washing and drying the strands are spun into yarn and woven into fabric.

Lyocell is also 50% more absorbent than cotton, uses half as much water as cotton in production, and its breathability means it doesn’t retain odours, meaning lyocell can be washed less frequently, saving water.

All of the 100% Lyocell Fabric we use at PLC is Lenzing [link to glossary] certified, cultivated in Indonesia and dyed to Reach compliance, then twisted and spun in Portugal in a SMETA certified factory.

Tencel

Tencel

This lustrous, high quality fabric was destined for landfill until it was offered to us by our SMETA certified London factory ApparelTasker.

We use it to create our beautiful pajama suit and cargo trouser. Not only are we preventing waste, but we have been lucky enough to use the leftovers of such a luxurious material with a texture softer than silk and smoother than cotton.

Composed of natural material, all Tencel fibres are biodegradable and compostable under industrial, home, soil and marine conditions, thus they can always fully revert back to nature.
